The Elements of Style

Once you get the hang of it, publishing something on the web is a piece of cake. However, writing with style is a profession by itself which shouldn’t be taking too lightly. Good and pleasant writing attracts visitors and keeps them coming back.

When I realised the importance of this I started looking for books. This is something I always do when I want to learn something new. It’s nice to sit down on the couch now and then and still feel like I’m doing something useful that will improve my web skills. I just found this great introduction to shell scripting. It’s written by Apple and it’s called Shell Scripting Primer. It starts off by telling you about the different dialects of shell scripting but soon goes into details. Everything is accompanied by clear examples.

Is your site C.R.A.P.?

C.R.A.P. stands for: contrast, repetition, alignment and proximity. The C.R.A.P.-principles are a good set of basic rules for web designers. They can progressively increase the quality of a design.
I do not see myself as a designer but more as a programmer. When I first learnt about these principles I was immediately enthusiastic because they are to the point and practical. That’s what guys and girls like me need. When I made my first design after learning about this I paid attention to these principles and noticed that my common-sense wasn’t that bad. But I really improved my design skills in some area’s using just these four principles.

Web Hosting Explained (part I)

In this article I will discuss the basics that are part of a web hosting company. There will be more articles following this one. My end goal of these articles is to give you enough information so you can decide what you need for your site and, maybe even more important, what you don’t need!
There are so many web hosts nowadays with so many different features and packages that it became really hard to judge whether a web host is good or not. It is not my intention to tell you which specific web host to pick.
