Webmaster glossary

This a list of webmaster and website terminology. If you have any suggestions please contact me an I will add more.

C

  • CGI: The Common Gateway Interface is a standard that allows a webserver to execute scripts or programs instead of serving a static page. These days, scripts are usually run by means of webserver extensions which is much faster.

H

  • Hit: A request to a webserver for a file like a script, html page, image, stylesheet or any other file. Not to be confused with a pageview

P

  • Pageview: the viewing of an actual page. Not to be confused with a hit

S

  • SEO: “Search Engine Optimization”. The practice of optimizing a website in such a way that it ranks better in search engines.

W

  • WYSIWYG: “What You See Is What You Get”. This acronym is used for editors that show and let you edit in the page as it will appear when published. Traditional word processors use this technique but some website editors don’t. Examples of WYSIWYG web editors are Adobe Dreamweaver and Microsoft Frontpage.
